本課程將綜覽有關物質的各種形上學議題：

1. 物質是客觀的存在，還是如柏克萊（George Berkeley）的唯心主義所說，「存在就是被感知？」
2. 哲學家常常談起物質的性質，但如何理解「性質」這個概念？
3. 物質除了其運動以外，有其內在的、根本的性質嗎？
4. 如有，我們能夠認識那些內在性質嗎？那些內在性質會不會是「意識」？
5. 物質所遵從的物理法則是必然還是偶然的？
6. 物質所遵從的形而上法則是必然還是偶然的？
7. 這個世界會不會像某些極端的一元論者所說，其實只有一個物體？

This course is an overview of topics in philosophy of matter, including:
1. Is matter an objective existence, or is it as described by the idealist George Berkeley, ‘to be is to be perceived’?
2. Philosophers often talk about properties of matter, but what are ‘properties’? Further, what is the distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic properties?
3. Apart from its motions, does matter have a fundamental, intrinsic nature?
4. If yes, can we know of any such nature? Is it ‘consciousness’?
5. Are the physical laws which govern matter necessary or contingent?
6. Are the metaphysical principles which govern matter necessary or contingent?
7. Does our world, as some radical monists remark, contain only one object?
